Introduction
The Monthly Budget Calculator helps you track your income against your monthly expenses across common categories — housing, food, transport, utilities, entertainment, and other costs — so you can see at a glance how much you are saving or overspending each month.
How to Use
Enter your monthly figures in each field:
- Monthly Income: Your total take-home income for the month, e.g., 50000.
- Housing: Rent or home loan EMI and related costs, e.g., 12000.
- Food & Groceries: Monthly spend on groceries and eating out, e.g., 8000.
- Transport: Fuel, public transport, or cab expenses, e.g., 3000.
- Utilities & Bills: Electricity, water, internet, and phone bills, e.g., 2000.
- Entertainment: Movies, subscriptions, outings, e.g., 1500.
- Other Expenses: Any remaining monthly costs, e.g., 1000.
Click "Calculate Budget" to see your total expenses and remaining balance (savings) for the month.
Formula/Methodology
Total Expenses = Housing + Food & Groceries + Transport + Utilities & Bills + Entertainment + Other Expenses
Remaining Balance (Savings) = Monthly Income − Total Expenses
Savings Rate (%) = (Remaining Balance ÷ Monthly Income) × 100
Worked Example
Using the sample figures: Income ₹50,000; Housing ₹12,000; Food ₹8,000; Transport ₹3,000; Utilities ₹2,000; Entertainment ₹1,500; Other ₹1,000.
Total Expenses = 12,000 + 8,000 + 3,000 + 2,000 + 1,500 + 1,000 = ₹27,500
Remaining Balance = ₹50,000 − ₹27,500 = ₹22,500
Savings Rate = (22,500 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 45%

FAQ
Q1: What if my expenses exceed my income?
The calculator will show a negative remaining balance, indicating you are spending more than you earn that month, which is a signal to review and cut down on discretionary categories like entertainment or other expenses.
Q2: Should EMIs be included under Housing?
Home loan EMIs are commonly included under Housing, but if you have other loan EMIs (personal loan, car loan), you can add them under Other Expenses for a complete picture.
Q3: Is there a recommended savings percentage?
Many financial planners suggest aiming to save at least 20% of your monthly income, though this varies based on individual goals, city of residence, and life stage.
