Formula Behind the Calculation
The core relationship is:
Transfer Time (seconds) = File Size (in bits) ÷ Bandwidth (in bits per second)
Since file sizes are usually shown in bytes and speeds in bits, the tool converts using: 1 Byte = 8 bits, so File Size in bits = File Size in MB × 8 × 1,000,000.
Worked Example
To download a 2 GB file (2,000 MB) on a 50 Mbps connection: File size in bits = 2,000 × 8 = 16,000 megabits. Time = 16,000 ÷ 50 = 320 seconds ≈ 5.3 minutes (in ideal, uninterrupted conditions).
